Feng Wentu, a senior Chinese artist, is the first batch selected as China Intangible Culture Heritage Inheritor. He has been engaged in woodcarving for 40 years and created thousands of famous artworks. His awarded works include The Spring in Xishuangbanna, Sister Yang (Eighth Elder) on a Spring Outing, Sister Liu (Third Elder), Four Ancient Beauties, and Bark Lady, all of which have been shown on International Expo and National Arts & Crafts Expo. His Military-civilian Defense and Peaceful Spring have been collected by Shandong Museum and Zhejiang Museum after published by Xinhua Agency respectively. In terms of decoration, he undertook the design and construction projects of huge woodcarving for many Chinese-foreign hotels and restaurants, such as Singapore Donggong Hotel, Great Hall of the People, Xihua Hall in Zhongnanhai, Reception Hall of Central Committee Party School of the C.P.C, Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, VIP Hall of Tibet Gymnasium, German Summer Palace Hotel, China Town Hotel, Asia Hotel, Swedish Mongolia Hotel and Hangzhou Restaurant. He not only continues to research traditional art and technique of Dongyang woodcarving, but also focuses on innovation, so he can create vogue forms and techniques like “semi-sculpture”, “original woodcarving”, “bark sculpture” and “root-stone sculpture”.
He firstly sums up the thirteen carving techniques of Dongyang woodcarving and wrote Dongyang Woodcarving Technique published by Zhejiang Technology Press. Meanwhile, his papers have been issued on national and provincial publications, for example, On Decorative Art of Dongyang Woodcarving, Dongyang Woodcarving Furniture Design, Interesting Original Woodcarving and On Style and Technique of Dongyang Woodcarving.
In 1986, he took up the post of schoolmaster of Dongyang Woodcarving School and trained lots of woodcarving technicians, some of which have been entitled as provincial masters.
During his performance in Japan in April 1992, he won great recognition among Japanese and counterparts by exquisite craftsmanship.
Recently, he has innovated and improved a lot. His Chinese Power, Seasons Song, Authentic Paintings of Tang Bohu and Five Continents were awarded the Gold Medal on West China Trade Fair and 87 Immortals was granted Special Medal. His large screen works School Scene hanging on the VIP Hall of Central Committee Party School, Experiencing Canal on Huaibei Museum and Blooming Spring on the Reception Hall of Supreme People's Procuratorate are influential. Till now, he has never rested to create woodcarving works and train new inheritors.
